Thank you for being here :) My name is Nzilani Simu - a graphic designer, illustrator and hand-letterer born, raised and based in Nairobi, Kenya. After many years of dreaming and drawing and dreaming and drawing (repeat…) I finally started the brand KULULA in 2017.
KULULA means ‘to draw’ in my mother tongue - Kikamba; I felt that the name would be a great way to forever connect this creative outlet to my ancestral roots.
KULULA goods usually begin as something hand-drawn which are then digitally filled in with vibrant colours, hopefully coming through as quirky artworks with a soul. I hope to do more fully hand-made items in the near future including lino-cut prints. All the products are made and printed in Kenya.
When not doing KULULA, I work as a freelance graphic designer - you can see my portfolio here > nzilanisimu.com. And I teach graphic design at the Africa Digital Media Institute .
